‘Rigoletto’ at The Metropolitan Opera
This autumn, Stephen Costello returns to The Metropolitan Opera to reprise his acclaimed role as the Duke of Mantua in Verdi’s Rigoletto, a thrilling exploration of power, seduction, and revenge. Sharing the stage with a stellar cast, Costello stars alongside Quinn Kelsey as the tormented jester Rigoletto, Nadine Sierra as the innocent and ill-fated Gilda, J’Nai Bridges as the cunning Maddalena, and Soloman Howard and Ante Jerkunica, who alternate in the role of the deadly Sparafucile. Under the baton of Pier Giorgio Morandi, Bartlett Sher’s Art Deco-inspired production—originally premiered on New Year’s Eve 2021—transports audiences to a sleek 1920s world, richly layered and vibrantly detailed, where Verdi’s timeless tragedy unfolds amid a grand, cinematic set. Audiences can catch Mr. Costello’s performances on September 30, October 4, 8, 12, 17, 26, November 1, 4, and 8.
