‘Romeo et Juliette’ at the Canadian Opera Company

This fall, Stephen Costello returns to the Canadian Opera Company, starring as Roméo in Gounod’s retelling of Shakespeare’s classic love story, Roméo et Juliette. It’s a signature role for the tenor, who has previously bowed as Roméo at The Metropolitan Opera, Opernhaus Zürich, Santa Fe Opera, and others.

Costello joins an all-star cast, led by conductor Yves Abel. Kseniia Proshina sings Juliette, with Robert Pomakov as Frère Laurent, Gordon Bintner and Korin Thomas-Smith as Mercutio, Angelo Moretti as Benvolio, Megan Latham as Gertrude, Owen McCausland as Tybalt, Mark Stone as Count Capulet, Ben Wallace as Paris, Alex Halliday as The Duke, and Alex Hetherington as Stéphano. Amy Lee’s lush production sets the story in 19th-century New York City during the Gilded Age, supported by beautiful set and costume design by Emma Ryott.

Roméo et Juliette runs September 27 – October 18 at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto.
