‘Don Carlo’ at Semperoper Dresden

Stephen Costello returns to the Semperoper Dresden to star in the title role of Giuseppe Verdi’s four-act opera Don Carlo.

The engagement marks a return to the historic Dresden stage for Costello, who previously appeared at the house as the Duke of Mantua in Verdi’s Rigoletto. An acclaimed interpreter of the Italian dramatic repertoire, Costello has drawn critical praise for his nuanced, vocally grounded portrayal of Don Carlo, with Parterre Box lauding his delivery of a “plaintive, forbidden love” and delicate musical phrasing in the prince’s duets with Elisabetta.

Presented in a co-production with the Salzburg Easter Festival, and under the baton of Marcus Merkel, Costello headlines an international cast, starring opposite soprano Ewa Płonka as Elisabetta di Valois, bass Georg Zeppenfeld as Filippo II, baritone Boris Pinkhasovich as Rodrigo, Marchese di Posa, and mezzo-soprano Yulia Matochkina as La Principessa Eboli. The ensemble is completed by bass Taras Shtonda as the Grand Inquisitor, bass Oleksandr Pushniak as a Monk, tenor Simeon Esper as Count Lerma, soprano Nicole Chirka as Tebaldo, and soprano Dalia Medovnikov as the Voice from Heaven.

Costello performs at the Semperoper Dresden on Sunday, November 22 at 6:00 p.m., Friday, November 27 at 7:00 p.m., and Tuesday, December 1 at 7:00 p.m.
