‘Don Carlo’ at The Dallas Opera

This February, Stephen Costello brings his “powerful” and “empathetic” (Opera Online) interpretation of Verdi’s Don Carlo to The Dallas Opera. Costello is a favorite of the company; Don Carlo marks his tenth appearance in Dallas. He has previously bowed there in productions of Maria Stuarda, The Merry Widow, Roberto Devereux, Moby-Dick in the 2009/10 and 2016/17 seasons, Anna Bolena, Manon, Eugene Onegin, and Carmen.

Considered Verdi’s grandest opera, Don Carlo is both forbidden romance and searing family drama, set against the political turnmoil of the Spanish Inquisition. Costello joins an all-star cast in Louis Désiré’s production, with Nicole Car as Elizabeth de Valois, Etienne Dupuis as Rodrigo, Clémentine Margaine as Princess Eboli, Christian Van Horn as Philip II, and Morris Robinson as The Grand Inquisitor. Emmanuel Villaume conducts.

Don Carlo will be performed February 27 and  March 1, 4, and 7.
