‘Un ballo in maschera’ at the Edinburgh International Festival
This August, Stephen Costello returns to Opernhaus Zürich’s acclaimed production of Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera, as part of the Edinburgh International Festival. The tenor debuted the role in Zürich earlier this year. It’s a welcome return for Costello, who has previously delighted audiences in Zürich as Roméo in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette, the title role in Donizetti’s Roberto Devereux, and the tenor soloist in Verdi’s Requiem.
Costello’s history with Verdi’s repertoire includes a variety of signature roles, including the title role in Don Carlo, which earned him praise for “personifying the prince’s frustrated ardor with a bright and well-projected lyric tenor” (InterClassical).
Costello is joined by a fantastic cast, under the baton of Gianandrea Noseda, including Dalibor Jenis as Renato, Elena Stikhina as Amelia, Yulia Matochkina as Ulrica, and Rebeca Olvera as Oscar.
Un ballo in Maschera runs August 26-30th at the Edinburgh International Festival.
